An Instructional Strategy Framework for Online Learning Environments

ABSTRACT: The rapid growth of web-based instruction has raised many questions about the quality of online courses. It appears that many online courses are simply modeled after traditional forms of instruction instead of incorporating a design that takes advantage of the unique capabilities of web-based learning environments. The authors present a conceptual framework that can guide the development of online courses. Specific examples of instructional strategies that fit the framework are described in detail.

This peer-reviewed research study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What instructional principles for online learning environments can be derived from a fusion of multiple theories of learning?

2. Based on those principles, what specific instructional strategies or techniques can be applied in an online learning environment?
